At the time X700 was developed, there were no 2Gb microSD cards, available on the market. So, my guess is X700 doesn't support 2Gb memory cards. But It do support 1Gb microSD cards.
What do you think about card's file system? I think x700 doesn't support fat32 (my SD 512 formatted fat16). There was limit in fat16 filesystem on maximum filesize in 2 GB. Maybe this is the reason for unworking biig memore cards.
